McCoy has done a great job of satirizing the relentless world of the job hunt through his hilarious characters (“Carol of the Bored” and “Tom Brickman,” who patented his “Jun Tao closed palm grip” handshake, were my favorites!) while simultaneously relating good solid soulful advice. We all have to make our way in this deceptive world of what the author wryly calls “operational truth dynamics,” all the while trying to maintain our own honesty and dignity. This book will truly help you to develop your “promise muscles,” so that you can “network with integrity.” I highly recommend it, not just for job-seekers, but for those who need a passion-boost in their current jobs!
This is a laugh-out-loud narrative of the real-world tribulations of job-hunting. As if the process wasn't filled with enough potholes, McCoy inserts truly enjoyable turns in the road and trips down paths we can't foresee from behind the wheel. In his remarkable satirical voice, McCoy captures the mind of more than one character driving along this scenic highway of the job-hunt, showing those of us who have been there both recently and in the distant path how grateful we should be to be gainfully employed. Some of the funniest (and I mean belly-laugh-inducing) moments include reminders of those who think they know how to teach us everything from resume-building to interview style to dressing for success. Seriously? Are these the lessons we need after we've completed degrees on our own? Evidently, because there is an entire industry devoted to just that, and McCoy retells those experiences with a well-crafted hand.

I smiled, then I grinned, then I laughed aloud. Anyone who has looked for a job, which is pretty much everyone, can relate to the trials described in this clever book. McCoy is especially keen about the way job-hunting has become its own industry. His depictions of the self-styled "experts" who teach us how to interview, how to write a resume, how to "present," are very funny, exaggerated but not that much. His comic focus is on that long-suffering quality, truth (not "truthiness," not "alternate facts"), which makes the book even more topical. In job-hunting, we present a product, ourselves. The challenge is to provide truth-in-packaging, when the culture seems to reward the opposite. In that way, McCoy's hero is the classic naif of satire, the Candide, the Huck Finn, whose innate honesty and good nature clash with the cynicism and corruption of his society. I hope McCoy goes further with his character, as he makes his way through the long American crack-up. It'll crack us up (sorry).
