The year is 1860. Conflict threatens to dissolve the country in bitter strife if North and South cannot peacefully settle their differences. The calm serenity of life at Oaklayne Plantation near Richmond, VA is suddenly replaced with passionate friction between family members, as each person struggles through perilous situations encountered by each of them during a very difficult time in our nation’s history. Colonel Adam Layne is devastated but remains strong in his loyalty to the Union, despite being banished from the plantation by his father and deserted by his fiancée. The balance of his family stands strong with their father's Southern allegiance.
"Oaklayne, a Civil War Saga" is a historically accurate portrayal of a man struggling to serve both his family and his nation in a time when those things are in conflict.

This book is an enjoyable Civil War historical fiction adventure. While it is a little trite and formula like, I enjoyed it all the same. It is definitely light reading. The characters were typical and the settings also, but I became invested in their lives, and since this book 1 leaves off with threads not finished, I am going on to book 2.Product details

Oaklayne A Civil War Saga edition by Maurine R McCullah Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This book brought to life the southern Layne family living in a beautiful plantation near Richmond, Virginia. It tells of a family torn apart by different loyalties during the war, and how the war came close to destroying an entire family.
This is "darker" than the first book because the country and families are literally torn apart by the Civil War. This is not a 'happy' book but portrays that awful time for what if was and how it destroyed families and their homeland. It's sad but it's also a very moving book about the reality of that time and the price everyone paid.
One of the few books I have read and I have read many that depicted the strife caused in families -pitting brother against brother, father and the love of his life. The description of Andersonville was chilling. The spiritual aspects bringing the main character to understand how God's is always putting people in our lives to keep us in His loving care. This is usually understood when looking back. This plot was different than any Civil War era books I have read. No unneeded sex content.
I liked the well written book with historical information about the Civil War and the characters depicted the events that could have happened during that period. notes that I have purchased the sequel but the sequel is not in my library of books on my Fire. Help. What is the problem. Please resolve this issure.
A little to much about the civil war. I would have liked more time spent on the characters and their storyline. Also when switching to slave vernacular it came across as making fun of the way they spoke, not a very good transition. This book was literally like a history book, that's the only thing that really turned me off. I hope in the sequel we get to really follow the characters, and less history lessons. I read fiction for a reason
I enjoyed the book but it wasn't one of those that I couldn't put down. My problem with it was it got pretty predictable who was going to die and MANY did die....not much of the family left. There were parts that brought tears to my eyes and others that had me rooting for a particular person. I have downloaded the next book, but if it had cost more I wouldn't have.
I don't read much historical fiction but have always been a history enthusiast. From what I can tell and know this book reflects genuine history. The fictional Layne family and their struggles throughout the book bring a much more personal element and help you relate to the trials of that time. The author has set a wide scope but does a good job to keep multiple story lines related to one another, tying them together frequently so the reader doesn't get lost.
While it is clearly not a history textbook, Oaklayne gives the reader a glimpse into the reality of the war and the consequences of a nation dividing.
This book is an enjoyable Civil War historical fiction adventure. While it is a little trite and formula like, I enjoyed it all the same. It is definitely light reading. The characters were typical and the settings also, but I became invested in their lives, and since this book 1 leaves off with threads not finished, I am going on to book 2.
